Views but No Streams? Fix Your Rap Clip’s Listening Path

Artist Tips · DSGFX

A viewer can enjoy your best bar and still leave without knowing the song title. Before making another clip, check what happens after the one you already have. Can someone recognize the track and reach the full performance?

1. Give the clip its own payoff

Pick a bar, a performance moment or a setup and payoff that makes sense by itself. A long explanation about why people should listen can get in the way of hearing the music.

Try performing the line about your first studio session, then showing the real notebook or recording detail behind it. This is a creative exercise, not a claim about what an algorithm will reward.

2. Name the song and the next step

Use the actual track title on screen and in the spoken invitation. Keep the next step short enough to understand while watching:

“That's verse two of Night Shift. The full performance is linked below my handle.”

Only use that location if the link actually appears there. Match the title on the destination video. If your Short says Night Shift but the next video has an unrelated title and no full song, you've introduced another obstacle.

3. Use a supported clickable route on YouTube Shorts

Pasted URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable. A Related Video can lead viewers to another video from your own channel. You need advanced feature access, and the selected video must be public or unlisted and follow YouTube's rules.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
  2. Choose the Short you want to edit.
  3. Select a Related Video from your channel.
  4. Choose the full performance or visualizer that delivers the track and save.

The related-video link appears below your channel handle. This route keeps the first step within YouTube. It does not automatically send a listener to Spotify.

4. Walk the entire route on a phone

  • Open the published Short as a viewer.
  • Check that the song title is readable and correct.
  • Tap the related video and confirm it contains the intended full song.
  • If you offer a Spotify destination, test the actual channel-profile or eligible long-form-video link too.
  • Check whether the destination opens the correct artist and song.

YouTube lists profile links as clickable. External links in long-form descriptions require advanced feature access. Test the route you use rather than assuming a URL typed into any field will become a button.

A quick repair example

Before: a good verse clip, “song out now” in the caption, and a pasted Spotify URL in a Shorts comment.

After: the real song title on the clip, a short invitation to the full performance, and a verified Related Video. Any further listening link is checked where YouTube actually supports it.

What to measure

Record the clip, its destination and the date you changed the route. Where your account provides the relevant reports, look for deliberate full-video viewing and destination activity. Keep clip views, full-track viewing, link clicks and Spotify listening separate. You cannot turn them into one conversion rate without compatible reporting and a supported connection.

Do this today: repair one existing clip and test it on a phone. Keep the performance; make the next step easier to find.
